There are plenty of cheaper options if you have access to a Guitar Center. I currently run a MOTU 8pre interface into a Mac. If the room acoustics are bad no microphone on the planet will help you. Microphone placement was the key along with recording in a decent space. I have had perfectly acceptable results with a Radio Shack microphone and a Tascam 424 recording to cassette. I also think sometimes there is an overemphasis on equipment and not enough on recording technique. A Mogami cable will set you back $60 and will dramatically improve the sound of your Shure 57 and 58.

To further clarify, I think you have good quality mikes and that other factors may have more influence on the results you are getting.
